Overview:

Whitney is first introduced in the story when Zak challenges her to a Gym battle in Goldenrod City. After a difficult battle (mostly thanks to Whitney's Miltank and its Rollout attack), Zak is forced to call upon his Scizor, which proceeds to reveal its rebellious nature by refusing to stop attacking even when Zak commands it to. Zak returns Scizor to its Great ball, though by this stage Whitney is distraught and leaves the arena in floods of tears. Zak decides that a Gym badge is meaningless to him, as all he needs is the knowledge that he won the battle, and so attempts to apologise before leaving the Gym.

Whitney is eventually consoled by her friend Ayane and her uncle, who both persuade her to catch up to Zak and accompany him on his journey in the hopes that she could learn something and improve her trainer skills by travelling out in the world and abandoning her previously sheltered life. Whilst Zak is hesitant at first, he soon discovers that Whitney is persistent and allows her to accompany him to Violet City. The two then proceed to journey south to Ilex Forest.
